Why Does My New Rug Smell?

A new rug smell is very common and completely normal. Here's what causes it and how to get rid of it quickly.

Why does my new rug smell?

New rugs — especially those made from synthetic fibers like polypropylene, nylon, or polyester — can emit a smell when first unrolled. This is known as off-gassing and comes from:

• Latex backing: Many hand-tufted rugs use a latex adhesive to secure the pile. This can produce a rubber-like odor that dissipates over time.
• Dyes and finishing treatments: Rugs are treated with dyes, stain-resistant coatings, or other finishes during manufacturing that can produce a mild chemical smell.
• Packaging: Rugs are tightly rolled and sealed in plastic for shipping. Being confined in packaging can concentrate any odors.
• Natural fibers: Rugs made from wool, jute, sisal, or other natural materials may have an earthy or lanolin smell that is inherent to the material.

Is it harmful?

In most cases, new rug odor is not harmful. It is a cosmetic issue that resolves on its own with ventilation and time. If you have sensitivities to odors or chemical smells, follow the steps below to speed up the process.

How to get rid of the smell

1. Unroll and air out the rug in a well-ventilated area — outdoors or in a room with open windows — for 24-48 hours before placing it in your space.
2. Sprinkle baking soda generously over the rug, let it sit for several hours or overnight, then vacuum thoroughly.
3. Increase ventilation in the room where the rug is placed — open windows and use fans to circulate fresh air.
4. Allow time — most odors dissipate naturally within a few days to a couple of weeks with normal use and airflow.

Natural fiber rugs (wool, jute, sisal)

Natural fiber rugs may have a stronger or more persistent earthy smell due to the organic materials used. This is normal and not a sign of a defect. Airing the rug out and using baking soda as described above will help. The smell typically fades within 1-2 weeks.
