If your rug arrived with an issue, it's important to identify whether it is transit damage or a manufacturing defect. The distinction affects how the claim is handled and what resolution options are available.
What is transit damage?
Transit damage occurs during shipping and is caused by the carrier handling the package. Examples include:
- Torn, crushed, or wet packaging on arrival.
- Rug that is bent, creased, or compressed from improper handling.
- Visible cuts, punctures, or tears caused by packaging or carrier equipment.
- Water damage from exposure during transit.
What is a manufacturing defect?
A manufacturing defect is a flaw that originated during the production of the rug — before it was shipped. Examples include:
- Uneven pile height or missing tufts.
- Loose or pulled threads not caused by use or handling.
- Color bleeding, uneven dyeing, or pattern misalignment.
- Structural issues such as a warped or uneven foundation.
- Backing that is separating or improperly applied.
Why does the distinction matter?
- Transit damage is filed as a carrier claim with FedEx or ABF Freight. The carrier investigates and determines the resolution.
- Manufacturing defects are handled directly with the vendor or manufacturer. Resolution options may include a replacement, partial refund, or full refund depending on the defect and vendor policy.
In both cases, Rugs Direct will assist you through the process.
Required photos
To process any damage or defect claim, we need clear photos. Please provide:
- The outer packaging — show all sides, including any damage to the box or wrapping.
- The shipping label on the package.
- The damaged or defective area of the rug — close-up and from a distance.
- The full rug laid flat — so we can see the overall condition.
- Any delivery receipt if damage was noted at the time of delivery.
The more detail your photos provide, the faster we can resolve your claim.
How to report damage or a defect
- Take photos as described above immediately upon discovery.
- Contact our Customer Care team with your order number and photos.
- Do not discard the packaging until your claim is resolved.
- Do not return the rug until instructed to do so — returning without authorization may delay your resolution.
Important: Claims should be reported as soon as possible after delivery. Delays in reporting may affect your eligibility for a replacement or refund.
