Rug Shedding: What's Normal and What to Expect

Shedding is a normal characteristic of many rugs, especially new ones. It is not a defect. Here's everything you need to know about why it happens, what to expect, and how to reduce it.

Why do rugs shed?

Shedding occurs when loose fibers that were not fully secured during manufacturing work their way to the surface. This is most common in:

• Wool rugs: Wool is a natural fiber with shorter strands that can loosen with foot traffic and vacuuming. Shedding is very common in new wool rugs.
• Hand-tufted rugs: The tufting process can leave loose fibers in the pile that shed during the first weeks of use.
• High-pile and shag rugs: Longer fibers are more prone to shedding and tangling.
• New rugs of any type: Almost all new rugs shed to some degree during the break-in period.

Is shedding a defect?

No. Shedding is not considered a manufacturing defect. It does not affect the quality, durability, or lifespan of your rug. It is a natural part of the break-in process and will decrease significantly over time.

How long does shedding last?

For most rugs, shedding is most noticeable in the first few weeks to a few months of use. With regular vacuuming, it typically reduces significantly within 1-3 months. High-pile wool rugs may shed for longer.

How to reduce shedding

• Vacuum regularly — once or twice a week during the break-in period helps remove loose fibers faster.
• For wool and delicate rugs, use a vacuum without a beater bar or rotating brush to avoid damaging the fibers.
• Vacuum in the direction of the pile, not against it.
• Avoid pulling or cutting loose threads — if a thread is sticking up, trim it with scissors flush to the pile rather than pulling it out.
• Use a rug pad to reduce friction between the rug and the floor, which can help minimize shedding over time.

What is not normal

While shedding is normal, the following may indicate a quality issue worth reporting:

• Large clumps of fiber coming out with light use.
• Bald patches or visible thinning of the pile.
• Shedding that does not decrease at all after several months of regular use.
